cadillacs for microphones: texas tech

Why hello there and welcome back, party people. Summer vacation has just begun, and so therefore maybe it's time to catch up on those emails, hours of sleep, and Facebook posts that display the delightfully…misguided and erroneous answers we find on those music history/appreciation/elective exams. (I think I might have to submit my Miguel Cabrera answer…someday…)

Anyway, back in March I took a trip out to Texas Tech to hear Spielzeug Straßenbahn; it finally received its world premiere. Finally.

Wednesday, March 12

1:00 p.m.

I was supposed to leave for Lubbock, but then my flight got cancelled. Thanks Delta! Of course, Lindsay Cat was probably thankful for that.

Yes, I've posted this photo before. How can I not?

Instead I was wrapping up my new piece for Brevard College, which probably should have been handed in on March 1. Oops.

Thursday, March 13

8:00 a.m. (EDT)

My flight was rescheduled until the next morning, which meant I had to be up at six sans shower. (Joyous.) This flight from CVG to LBB was spent either napping or working on parts for Brevard. (The computer-poker-playing lady next to me probably wondered what the heck I was doing.)

I sent parts and score during my layover in Dallas. (#livingthedream)

3:00 p.m. (CDT)

I arrived at Texas Tech and saw my good friend Nathan Madsen, über-cool conductor dude whom I've known for over a decade now (from my USC days). In fact, Nate offered me my first commission back in 2008!

With Kelley O'Connor (left), me (center), and Nathan Madsen (right)
But anyway, I saw Nate, and it had been YEARS since I saw him, and he greeted me with the biggest hug and then we met his conducting student and talked shop.

9:30 p.m.

Late-night rehearsal.

I found some flyers for the event.

Friday, March 14

1:30 to 5:30 p.m.

This is the part in which I was doing NANOWorks stuff, mentoring for Music-COMP, grading, or downing as much Mexican food that I could muster.

Did I mention I got a stupid parking ticket? A*******.

8:00 p.m.

And after the premiere:

Bravi to everyone. Also, there is a harpsichord onstage.
Saturday, March 15 (afternoon)

I spent the day with Nate, which was beyond wonderful. Seriously. We may have done some sightseeing.

Sunday, March 16

7:45 a.m.

Flight leaves for CVG (and guess what time I had to be there).

5:05 p.m. (EDT)

Flight arrives in Cincinnati. This was also the last day of my spring break, so I had to drive two hours up to OWU. (#livingthedream)

———

Even though my flight plans were kind of rough, I seriously had a wonderful time in Lubbock enjoying a performance AND catching up with Nate. It had been too long.
